Coming into the 2nd game of our double-elimination tournament we were unaware of who our opponent was going to be since this was determined by the other tournament games. We came to the field to find that we were going to play the Fireballs for the 4th time in the season. This was good, because we were 2-1 against the Fireballs for the season. So the opportunity was there to advance in the tournament.
Again, the coin toss determined home and visitor and, once again, the Whos took home.
Although it was a loss, putting a close to our 2008 season, this was one of the most exciting games of the season (and most fun) and it was decided, by literally a hair to close it out. So, it was a great way for the Whos to finish and I have to say that the girls really gave this last game everything they had. It was a see-saw battle to the end and it could've gone either way. Great job Whos on a great season. I hope you all had a great time this year and I hope to see you all again in '09.

RECAP
Shelbey and the Whos defense came in to the game with great determination. These girls really left it out on the field for what was possibly their last game of the season. The 1st Fireball batter got a base hit and was safe on 1st. The next batter hit a double scoring the 1st run of the game then made her way to 3rd base. Two walks later and the bases were loaded. Shelbey then ripped a couple past the next batter, but on the 3rd one the batter was able to connect sending the base runners, but Jade managed to snatch the ball on the fly for the 1st out, then touching 1st for a double play. A Fireball base hit brought in another runner, but that was it as Shelbey was able to strike out the next batter holding the Fireballs to 2 for the inning.
Kas, leading off for the Whos was able to connect with the ball, but the Fireball defense was able to get her out at 1st. Mari and Jade walked getting the Whos on base, then Maricella struck out and things looked bleak for the Whos in the 1st. But after a walk by Hylah to load the bases, the Whos started to connect. Cambria after almost striking out got a hit and was safe on 1st driving Mari in. I think this was Cambria's first hit of the season. Then, Shelbey got a hit to drive Jade in for another score. Casey walked scoring the next run, putting the Whos up by 1. And after the small hot streak, Gaby struck out to close out the 1st.
Mari came in to pitch the 2nd inning and the Fireballs hit a grounder down the center of the field. Mari picked it up and threw it to 1st, but the ball was dropped and the runner was safe. Mari walked the next 2 batters loading up the bases. The next two batters were able to bring 1 run each in with a base hit and a dropped fly ball respectively. Mari answered this with a strike out on the next batter. The next Fireball connected with a pitch driving one last run it, but then Mari, with a quick throw to 1st then a final strike out retired the side.
The Fireballs defense woke up for the 2nd inning. Kas walked to start things off then Mari got hit by a pitch to put 2 Who runners on base. Jade hit a ball down the 1st base side and she was thrown out at 1st. Maricella walked to load the bases, but the Fireball pitcher threw some heat and was able to strike Hylah and Cambria out to keep the Whos scoreless in the 2nd.
Our 3rd pitcher on the day was Hylah and I don't know what happened, but she really answered the Fireballs with some heat. After walking the 1st 2 Fireballs, the next batter hit a grounder sraight into Hylah's glove and she threw it straight to 1st for the out. Then, it looked as though she would walk the next batter with a count of 3-1 and she dug deep and pulled out the strike out. Then, building on that momentum, was able to strike out the next batter on the next 4 pitches giving up no runs in the inning.
Shelbey started off the 3rd inning for the Whos at the plate. The count was full and she managed to stay alive with a couple of foul tips, but unfortunately the pitcher finally got one by for the strike out. Next, Casey, Gaby and Kas walked to load the bases. After a strike out by Mari, Jade hit one to the outfield for a double, bringing in 2 runs. The Fireball pitcher started to struggle and Maricella, Hylah and Cambria all walked bringing in the 4th and the inning max. run. This also marked the 3rd lead change in the game.
Hylah came back in to pitch the 4th inning. After a walk and a strike out, Hylah couldn't find her groove from the 3rd inning and quickly the bases loaded. After a couple more walks, the Fireballs scored 2 and the lead changed again as they went up by 1. Hylah called in for the switch and Mari took the rubber for the 2nd time in the game. Mari really stepped it up and handled her business by striking the next 2 Fireballs out and forcing the side change.
The Whos came up to bat trailing by 1. They knew they had their work cut out for them if they were going to advance to the next round. Shelbey answered the call by getting a base hit to put the tying run on base. She then stole her way to scoring position ready to go on the next hit. Casey and Gaby both struck out and the door began to close on the Whos' 2008 season. Kas came up to bat and after a couple of strikes, it looked to be the end of the game, but on the next pitch Kas connected and drove a quick grounder down the 1st base line. From my 3rd base coaching position, the ball looked like it rolled foul. So, I thought they were going to call it back, but no, it was fair Shelbey took off for home and Marissa, the Fireball 1st baseman charged the ball and almost missed the scoop, then quickly turning managed to touch 1st base before Kas got there and, more importantly before Shelbey was able to tie it up, ending the game and the season for the Whos.
GAME BALL
The game ball for this last game was very difficult to decide. There was such great play out there by all our Whos that I almost put it to a vote. After considering the options I felt that, for all her hard work during practice and working all season to finally get a hit especially during our last practice, Cambria deserved the game ball for this game. Keep it up, work on that level swing and not being afraid of the pitches and next year you'll tear it up out there. Congratulations!

Post-Season: Game 1 - Tue 6.3 - L
Mid way through the season, the league board decided to do away with the last week of our regular schedule and replace it with a tournament style championship. This was to be a double-elimination tournament to give our Rec Ball girls a taste of what Travel or Tournament Ball was like. It also afforded teams a chance to wipe the slate clean and fight their way to the championship.
Unfortunately for the Whos, we drew the Stingers for our first game. These girls proved to be our toughest opponents all season and they didn't disappoint in that department.
A coin toss decided the home and visiting team. The Whos won the toss and decided to take home. And the game was under way.

RECAP
Shelbey put on a great 1st inning pitching performance to start the game. After walking the 1st batter, another batter hit a pop-up fly ball that Jade managed to get a hold of for the 1st out. The next batter got on base and the runners stole their way to 2nd and 3rd. 3 more walks lead to bases loaded and 2 scores, but Shelbey reeled it back in a peeled of 2 consecutive strike outs to hold the Stingers to 2 on the inning.
The Whos came up to bat to try to catch up to the Stingers early on, but unfortunately the Stinger defense was on fire. Mari struck out, Gaby hit the ball hard towards the Stinger short stop who was able to control the ball and make the play at 1. Kas hit the ball and the Stingers made the play at 1 again to shut the Whos down with nothing on the board.
Shelbey came back in for the 2nd inning, but struggled to find the groove she established at the end of the 1st. After a couple of walks, the bases were loaded. The next batter hit a grounder through the infield for a double. The next batter hit a slow grounder that Mari was able to field, but this pulled her off of 2nd base and with no backup coverage forced a foot race to the bag, but the runner was safe and the Stingers scored again. On the next batter, the bases loaded up again. The next batter hit a ball to Gaby and she was able to get the out at 3rd. And, on a pop up, the ball found a seam and hit the ground allowing the Stingers to score the 4th and final run of the inning.
Jade started off the 2nd inning Who's offense with a big hit to the outfield, but the quick Stinger defense was able to hold her at 1. She then stole her way to 3rd. Angelica walked then stole 2nd. Then Hylah walked to load the bases. Maricella walked putting the Whos on the board for the first time on the day. She hit Casey on her next at bat scoring our 3rd run, then Destinee walked scoring the inning limit of 4.

Kas walked then stole to 2nd then Jade walked to load the bases. The Stingers pitcher seemed to struggle but, at this point in the inning, she found her target and was able to strike Angelica and Hylah in quick succession closing out the 3rd inning.

A hit to the outfield went straight to Angelica and with a great effort, Angelica hustled for the ball, fieled it and threw it to Mari at 2nd, but the batter was able to reach the bag before the ball got there. A couple of walks loaded the bases. Then, Jade got the 1st strike out of the inning. A couple of walks scored 2 more for the Stingers and Jade signaled for the switch. Mari came in off of 2nd to replace Jade at the rubber. Her 1st batter hit and was safe at 1 allowing another score, then another base hit brought another Stinger across the plate. Mari, finally found her focus and shut the Stingers down with 2 back to back strike outs.
Coming into our last at bats, the Whos knew that catching up would be tough against this team. Maricella walked then on a steal was thrown out at 2nd base. Shelbey walked and Casey walked right after. Destinee walked to load the bases, then Cambria came up to bat. Cambria struck out for the 2nd of the inning and the door started to close on the Whos. Mari walked on her next at bat. Then, Gaby, out of the blue got a big hit to the outfield and 3 Whos were able to score. Kas came up to bat, but the pitcher was able to gei 3 past her to close out the game.
GAME BALL
There were a couple of high points during this game that warranted a nomination for the game ball. Angelica really finally showed some hustle and some game awareness when she went for the out attempt at 2nd. Mari, once again, cleaned up with her pitching in the 3rd inning. Jade hit a nice one to the outfield and Hylah continued to hold down the fort at catcher. But, the game ball for this game was awarded to Gaby for her 'out of nowhere' hit in the 4th that drove in 2 runs that created some excitement at the end of the game. Good job Gaby!

San Lorenzo All Star Team
On Monday June 2, at the SLGSL Board Meeting, the San Lorenzo All-Star team was announced to the coaches and managers.

Game 19 - Double Header Game 2 - Sat 5.31 - W
Coming off of the loss to the Raiderettes, the Whos played their 2nd game of the day in Piedmont hosted by the Piedmont Peppers. Fortunately the Whos were able to split the difference on the day and go out with a win. I have to say that the new surroundings and the Piedmont field were a great place to play our 2nd game of the day. But once again, this Piedmont team (or the ump) didn't seem to know all the rules we were playing under. This caused some frustration on our part. But aside from that, this game was probably one of the more fun games to play this season. Not just because of the win, although that may have played a factor, but since the interleague games don't count for our standings, I think we just went out there to have fun and that seemed to show through in how our girls played their game.

RECAP
The Whos took their at bats and you wouldn't have thought that they played and lost the earlier game to the Raiderettes. This Who team was energized and came ready to play. Mari walked to get on 1st and stole 2nd. Gaby then hit a ball to the infield and Mari took off for 3rd, while Gaby held at 1st. On the next pitch Gaby stole 2nd. Kas came up for her 1st turn, but struck out. Jade put us on the board with 3 by hitting one deep into center field for her 1st home run of the day bringing Mari and Gaby with her. Hylah and Destinee followed this up with walks then advanced to 2nd and 3rd. Shelbey hit a grounder and Hylah took off, but the Peppers were able to field the ball and get it back to home. Hylah chose not to slide and was tagged out at home. Casey came up but the Peppers got 3 past her to get the 3rd out of the inning.
Shelbey leading things off at pitcher fielded the first grounder and got it to Hylah at 1st to notch the 1st out of the inning. The next batter hit one into the outfield, but the Whos managed to hold her at 1. Shelbey was then able to make quick work of the next 2 batters to hold the Peppers scoreless.
The next Who at bat started off with Angelica getting stuck out. Mari got on base with a walk then stole her way around to 3rd. Gaby hit one high and was missed in the infield and the confusion allowed both Mari to score and Gaby to be safe on 1st. Gaby then stole her way to scoring position. On her next at bat, Jade was hit by the ball and gained 1st base. Then Hylah hit a wobbly ball to the Peppers' short stop, but she overthrew to 1st alowing Hylah to get to 2nd and driving Gaby across home. Destinee came up for her turn, but the Peppers put an end to the Who attack with a strike out, retiring the side.

A quick play by Hylah on the next pitch got the ball to 3rd base to get the out on the runner who was trying to steal 3rd. The next batter hit a quick grounder to Kas at short stop who gunned it to Jade at 1st to make the 2nd out. The next batter got on base, then a short pop up was caught by Mari to get the 3rd out of the inning.
Top of the 3rd and the Whos came up to bat. The Peppers sensing that this game was slipping away, put in a new pitcher. Shelbey hit a short grounder to the pitcher and the throw beat her to 1st for the out. Casey walked and stole to 2nd. On Gaby's turn, the pitcher was able to string 3 together for the strike out. Then, Mari hit the ball, but once again, the Peppers' defense came together to get the out at 1.
Hylah was tapped to pitch for the 2nd time this season. She hasn't had a lot of practice with pitching as her focus was mostly on catching this year. This, combined with the wobbly, hammered-in pitching rubber caused her to struggle to find her strikes. The first batter walked and stole to 3rd. Hylah struck out the next batter, but then loaded the bases on walks. The next walk put the Peppers on the board for the first time in the game. Hylah hit the next batter and she took 1st base bringing another runner in. The next walk brought in a 3rd runner. Gaby fielded the next hit and decided to protect the lead by throwing to Jade at home for the 2nd out. But Hylah walked another batter, which brought in the 4th runner, tying up the game at the top of the 4th. The Peppers were right back in it.
To open up the 4th, Gaby hit a single then stole 2nd. Kas struck out on her next turn. Jade, then, hit her 2nd home run of the game brining Gaby in to score 2, regaining the lead. Hylah was hit by a pitch and got on base, then stole to scoring position. Destinee came up to bat, but despite her best efforts was not able to connect with the ball and struck out. Shelbey took her turn and connected, but it popped up and the Peppers were able to make the play and hold the Whos to 2 on the inning. They were still in the game.
Jade was tapped to pitch in the 4th. Before play started, and clearly still uneasy with her recent pitching performances, she asked to have the switch ready to go. Although I didn't want to pull her - as she needed to 'get back on the horse' to regain her confidence - I called Shelbey and Mari to be ready for the switch if Jade asked for it. Jade managed to strike out the 1st batter, then followed it up with 2 walks that then advanced to 2nd and 3rd. Jade looked at me, but I was glad she decided to shake it off. The next batter hit the ball, but the runners held and she was safe at 1st and the bases were loaded. At this time, I told Jade to finish and I was very happy that she decided to do so. Jade worked her way to full count on the batter. Could this scenario be any more dramatic or tense - 4th inning, 2 outs, full-count, bases loaded? This game now hinged on the perfect pitch or hit as it could've gone either way. Jade found her target and wound up for the pitch, stepped forward and delivered the ball - definitely a strike by the looks of it. Now, could the batter connect? The batter stepped forward, twisted her hips and started to bring her hands forward and her bat around. An instant later, she swung high and the ball flew just under the bat into Hylah's glove. Strike 3! Batter's out. Game over. What an awesome way to end a great day of Softball.

Needless to say, the 2 home runs for a total of 5 of our 6 points and keeping it together to close the show, earned Jade the game ball for this game. Great job Jade! Don't lose confidence and work to find that pitch, we're going to need it in our tournament games.

Jade worked her way to full count on the batter. Could this scenario be any more dramatic or tense - 4th inning, 2 outs, full-count, bases loaded? This game now hinged on the perfect pitch or hit as it could've gone either way. Jade found her target and wound up for the pitch, stepped forward and delivered the ball - definitely a strike by the looks of it. Now, could the batter connect? The batter stepped forward, twisted her hips and started to bring her hands forward and her bat around. An instant later, she swung high and the ball flew just under the bat into Hylah's glove. Strike 3! Batter's out. Game over. What an awesome way to end a great day of Softball.

Needless to say, the 2 home runs for a total of 5 of our 6 points and keeping it together to close the show, earned Jade the game ball for this game. Great job Jade! Don't lose confidence and work to find that pitch, we're going to need it in our tournament games.
Game 18 - Double Header Game 1 - Sat 5.31 - L
As the Whos reported to the field to play their last game of the regulation 2008 season, there was a chill in the air to match the chilly Saturday morning. We gathered in the Home dugout and got our game plan together and started warming up the girls to play. As we looked over to the Raiderettes side of the field, they were surprisingly short of players. We thought that we would win the game on a forfeit, but at the last minute, the Raiderettes were able to field their 7th player to meet the league minimum and the game was started.
To start things off, this game was a defensive showcase as no runs were allowed until the game's midpoint. This also marked the first time the Whos went into a 5th inning in a game.

But this one popped up again and Gaby was caught out, which held the Whos at 0.

Mari took over at pitcher for the unprecedented (for the Whos) 5th inning of the game. She did not disappoint as she put in another incredible pitching performance. The first batter, hit through to Kas at short and the throw to 1st was missed, but the runner held. On the next pitch, the runner stole 2nd. Unfazed, Mari reached deep to strike out the next 3 batters in a row. Mari has very obviously worked on her pitching and her overall gameplay has seen a huge improvement over the season. Keep at it Mari. Great work!
Taking their final turn at bat - and the final chance to get on the board - the Whos knew it was now or never. The Raiderette pitcher blew 3 by Destinee to strike her out. Shelbey, then hit one down the 3rd base line, getting on base, then Casey walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Cambria struck out for the 2nd in the inning and it started to look bad for the Whos. Mari walked to load the bases. Last chance at bat for Gaby and the game was on her shoulders. She tried her hardest to connect, but the pitcher managed to put it just out of reach every time striking Gaby out to shut the Whos out for the first time in the season.

The game ball for this game went to Hylah who played the pivotal but largely unsung position at catcher. Hylah has become one of the more aggressive and intimidating catchers in the league. I've overheard players say that they are scared of her and heard opposing coaches comment on her play. In today's game, Hylah did incredibly by holding the Raiderettes on their bases, which was a key factor to the game going scoreless for the 1st 2 innings. In the 3rd, she also called the bunts to prepare the Who defense for the play. So, for this, the game ball goes to Hylah. Great work, keep it up!

Game 17 - Wed 5.28 - W
When we come back, we come back strong. With sheer determination and will, the Whos pulled themselves out of a hole to earn a victory in their last game versus the Tsunami team fresh off a win against the Stingers. This is impressive for a couple of reasons - 1) We have not come from behind like this before and 2) We won against a team that just beat our toughest challenge all year. Now, while reason 2 is less significant, because comparing 2 teams is a lot like apples and oranges and everyone can get hot and everyone can get cold, it still goes to show that every team in our division is beatable and that we have the skills and talent and, most importantly teamwork to make it happen. Our record is just that, a record and doesn't speak to how well the Whos have been playing all year. So, big hand to everyone for their effort out there. One more game left to play and that's on Saturday. Let's go out swinging Whos!

The opening inning of the game saw the Whos struggle a little on offense. Mari struck out to lead things off. After Shelbey walked and stole her way to scoring position, Angelica struck out as well and things started to look grim for the Whos early on. Jade came to the plate with different ideas though and hit a double, bringing Shelbey across the plate to put the Whos on the board. Gaby got hit by a pitch for a walk and after Destinee walked as well, the bases were loaded. Hylah came up to bat and was trying her hardest to connect, but unfortunately struck out to close out the Whos offense with only 1 on the board.
Shelbey started the game at pitcher, but was clearly struggling to find her groove. The 1st batter walked and stole 2nd. 2 more batters walked to load the bases. A hit by the next batter scored 2 for the Tsunami team to put them ahead. Shelbey did not lose her composure though. She stuck it out, but unfortunately a few more walks gave Tsunami 4 on the inning to close out the 1st.
Whos up to start off the 2nd. The bats started swingning here to put us back in the game. Destinee walked and stole to 3rd. Maricella, then Mari walked to load the bases. Shelbey hit a double to bring Destinee and Maricella in. Then Angelica walked to load the bases once again. Jade hit a double to the outfield and 3 runs scored to put the Whos up by 1 point.
Mari took the rubber to pitch for the Whos in inning 2. She didn't disappoint here as she showed great control and concentration in her debut pitching performance of the season. 1st batter walked and the 2nd hit a double to put runners on 2nd and 3rd.
A hit down the 1st base side into Gaby's glove allowed her to make the out at 1st, but a runner was able to score. A missed ball hit to the infield allowed another run. Another walk put runners on 1st and 3rd. Great heads up by Mari on the next play catching a ball for the 2nd out really got the Whos energy up. But, in true dramatic fashion another walk loaded the bases and the energy turned to nervousness. Mari pulled it together to finish the inning strong with a strike out and held the Tsunami to 2 on the inning.
Opening the 3rd, the Tsunami team started to struggle at pitcher and every Who that came to the plate walked scoring the inning max of 4 to force the side change.
Sensing an opportunity to take the game away from Tsunami, the Whos put Jade in to pitch, but the walk curse hit our side as well and every Tsunami that came up advanced their runners to score 4 for their side as well.
Coming into the (unlimited run) 4th inning trailing by 1, the Whos knew it was time to turn it on if they were going to take this one. And, sure enough, that's what they did. Angelica walked to lead things off. Jade fouled her way to 2 strikes and it looked like it might not happen for her, but she finally hit one to deep center field for a home run and scoring 2. Walks on the next 3 Whos loaded the bases. Destinee came up and, once again pulled out the 'phantom bunting' technique, but unfortunately struck out. Tsunami, was forced to switch their struggling pitcher. The next 3 Whos walked, this time scoring with each advance. Then Jade, starting off our 2nd run through the line up for the inning, hit another one to the outfield, this time for a triple, bringing in 3 more for the Whos. Gaby struck out, then Casey and Hylah walked to load the bases, but no more would cross the plate as the pitcher was able to strike Destinee out to finally stop the Who charge with 9 on the board for the side.
Jade, disappointed and frustrated with her previous inning's pitching performance, came to the rubber for the final inning. We agreed that if she walked 2 batters that she would be switched out. So, she came out determined to close. 1st batter walked. A quick hit to Shelbey at short and a soft toss to Angelica at 2nd got the 1st out of the inning. On the next play, Jade fielded a grounder and got the ball to Gaby at 1st for the 2nd out of the inning, however the other Tsunami runner scored at home. The next batter walked, then stole 2nd. I wanted to let Jade close since there was only 1 out left to finish, but after this second walk, Jade wasn't feeling it and motioned to me for the switch. Shelbey came off of short to take over. A hit to Destinee in left field put runners on 1st and 3rd. The next 4 batters (3 walks and 1 single) scored 4 more for Tsunami, closing the gap. But the next batter hit a slow grounder on the 1st base side that Gaby was able to pick up and tag 1st for the final out, holding onto the lead and closing the game.

Game 15 - Sat 5.17 - L
Well, we sure hit a wall in our last match up against the Stingers on Saturday, didn’t we? Hats off to the Stingers as they handed us what was possibly our soundest defeat of the season. Nothing we could’ve done here Whos. We played to the best of our abilities and a mixture of some of our hits not going our way and the Stingers’ solid performance put a damper on our hopes for a victory on Saturday.

Coming off our victory against the Fireballs last Tuesday, the Whos came with a lot of confidence for Saturday’s game. But the Stingers, who, as previously stated, have the most skilled/experienced players in our division was definitely going to be a considerable challenge for the Whos. Little did we know that they would stifle our offense the way they did.
Leading things off, the Stingers took to the plate to face Shelbey at the mound. An initial pop up was dropped by Gaby at 1st and the runner was safe. After the 1st strike out of the side, giving the Whos a glimmer of hope, the runner managed to steal her way to 3rd. The next batter hit one into the outfield and put the Stingers on the board, but the Whos were able to bring the ball back to hold the runner at 1st. A couple of walks allowed the Stingers to load the bases and walk one more in, but Shelbey kept her cool in the Saturday afternoon heat and struck out the next 2, holding the Stingers to 2 for the inning.
The Whos taking their turn at bat, hoping to put up a similar offense to their last game, was denied by the Stinger pitcher as Gaby, Mari and Jade were struck out in quick succession.
Shelbey’s next turn at the rubber started with a strike out of the 1st batter. But after a few walks and a perfect bunt the bases were loaded and the Stingers were threatening to score. The next Stinger roped one out into deep center field scoring 3. Shelbey walked the next batter to put a runner on 1 and 3, then struck out the next. The next batter connected on another pitch and put it into the outfield again and scored the max 4 runs for the Stingers.
The 2nd inning for the Whos was a little more eventful. Destinee struck out to lead off. At her turn, Angelica walked and for the 1st time in the game the Whos were on base. Kas, trying to extend her string of doubles connected with the pitch, but it popped up and Angelica took off for 2nd. The pitch was caught by the Stingers for 1 out, then they tagged 1st to catch Angelica off base – since she didn’t tag up – to complete the double play and keep us scoreless at the half way mark.
Jade took the rubber for the 1st time on the day and struck her first batter out, but lost the groove and loaded the bases. She struck her next batter out for the 2nd and it looked like she would hold the Stingers to their current score, but another walk allowed 1 run to cross home. One more walk crossed the plate before Jade was able to strike the 3rd Stinger out for the inning.
The situation looking grim, the Whos started to sense the urgency and tried to put together an offense. Shelbey’s first hit was fielded and she was thrown out at 1st. This was followed up by Casey, Hylah and Allison all taking a walk to load the bases. Maricella came up to bat and on the 1st bobbled catch, Allison took off like a bullet to steal 2nd. The only problem here, was that no one called for the run as the bases were loaded and the Stingers, reacting quickly, got the ball to 1st to tag her out as she was off base—you gotta love how this girl plays though, she’s aggressive and once she set her eyes on her goal, she was not going to be denied. Maricella walked to re-load the bases. Gaby then hit the ball which sent Casey towards home, but the force out at 3rd negated what would be the Whos’ 1st score of the game.
Jade came back to the rubber and walked her first batter. A pop up was missed by the infield allowing the Stingers to score again. Another missed toss to 1st allowed another before Jade was able to strike a batter out. Our errors started to hurt us here as an overthrow advanced the Stingers enough to score 2, but Jade, trying to slow them down managed to retrieve the ball and held the final Stinger runner on 2nd in what ended up being a pretty lengthy stand off, before the runner decided to hold on 2nd. On the next play, Gaby managed to get her runner out, but a walk and another hit to the outfield would score 2 more for the Stingers, extending their lead, before Jade was able to strike the last batter out for the inning.
Going into our last at bats with an insurmountable 14 point deficit, the Whos gave it their best shot as we were only just coming to the 2nd part of our lineup. Mari walked. Jade hit a triple to finally put us on the board by driving Mari in. Destinee, then Angelica walked to load the bases. Coming off our victory against the Fireballs last Tuesday, the Whos came with a lot of confidence for Saturday’s game. But the Stingers, who, as previously stated, have the most skilled/experienced players in our division was definitely going to be a considerable challenge for the Whos. Little did we know that they would stifle our offense the way they did.
Leading things off, the Stingers took to the plate to face Shelbey at the mound. An initial pop up was dropped by Gaby at 1st and the runner was safe. After the 1st strike out of the side, giving the Whos a glimmer of hope, the runner managed to steal her way to 3rd. The next batter hit one into the outfield and put the Stingers on the board, but the Whos were able to bring the ball back to hold the runner at 1st. A couple of walks allowed the Stingers to load the bases and walk one more in, but Shelbey kept her cool in the Saturday afternoon heat and struck out the next 2, holding the Stingers to 2 for the inning.
The Whos taking their turn at bat, hoping to put up a similar offense to their last game, was denied by the Stinger pitcher as Gaby, Mari and Jade were struck out in quick succession.
Shelbey’s next turn at the rubber started with a strike out of the 1st batter. But after a few walks and a perfect bunt the bases were loaded and the Stingers were threatening to score. The next Stinger roped one out into deep center field scoring 3. Shelbey walked the next batter to put a runner on 1 and 3, then struck out the next. The next batter connected on another pitch and put it into the outfield again and scored the max 4 runs for the Stingers.
The 2nd inning for the Whos was a little more eventful. Destinee struck out to lead off. At her turn, Angelica walked and for the 1st time in the game the Whos were on base. Kas, trying to extend her string of doubles connected with the pitch, but it popped up and Angelica took off for 2nd. The pitch was caught by the Stingers for 1 out, then they tagged 1st to catch Angelica off base – since she didn’t tag up – to complete the double play and keep us scoreless at the half way mark.
Jade took the rubber for the 1st time on the day and struck her first batter out, but lost the groove and loaded the bases. She struck her next batter out for the 2nd and it looked like she would hold the Stingers to their current score, but another walk allowed 1 run to cross home. One more walk crossed the plate before Jade was able to strike the 3rd Stinger out for the inning.
The situation looking grim, the Whos started to sense the urgency and tried to put together an offense. Shelbey’s first hit was fielded and she was thrown out at 1st. This was followed up by Casey, Hylah and Allison all taking a walk to load the bases. Maricella came up to bat and on the 1st bobbled catch, Allison took off like a bullet to steal 2nd. The only problem here, was that no one called for the run as the bases were loaded and the Stingers, reacting quickly, got the ball to 1st to tag her out as she was off base—you gotta love how this girl plays though, she’s aggressive and once she set her eyes on her goal, she was not going to be denied. Maricella walked to re-load the bases. Gaby then hit the ball which sent Casey towards home, but the force out at 3rd negated what would be the Whos’ 1st score of the game.
Jade came back to the rubber and walked her first batter. A pop up was missed by the infield allowing the Stingers to score again. Another missed toss to 1st allowed another before Jade was able to strike a batter out. Our errors started to hurt us here as an overthrow advanced the Stingers enough to score 2, but Jade, trying to slow them down managed to retrieve the ball and held the final Stinger runner on 2nd in what ended up being a pretty lengthy stand off, before the runner decided to hold on 2nd. On the next play, Gaby managed to get her runner out, but a walk and another hit to the outfield would score 2 more for the Stingers, extending their lead, before Jade was able to strike the last batter out for the inning.
Going into our last at bats with an insurmountable 14 point deficit, the Whos gave it their best shot as we were only just coming to the 2nd part of our lineup. Mari walked. Jade hit a triple to finally put us on the board by driving Mari in. Destinee, then Angelica walked to load the bases. Wow! That's all I can say about Tuesday's game. What an amazing win. The Whos were firing on all cylinders, pitching, fielding, batting, running. On Saturday, we met the Raiderettes for the 3rd time this season. Could this have been one of the more exciting games so far? Although we, lost this one again, the game was a see-saw battle until the end with lead changes at almost every inning. Good stuff.

Finally, Kas closed the side with a hit to the outfield, which she managed to turn into a triple driving Destinee and Angelica in to put up 4 points for the inning.
Jade at pitcher, after striking out the 1st batter, took a few tosses to find her groove. The Raiderettes hit a double, then a walk put runners on 1st and 2nd and a steal then advanced the Raiderettes to 2nd and 3rd. The next batter hit the ball to the outfield and bought the Raiderettes enough time to score 2. Finally, 2 quick plays at 1st – one by Destinee to Gaby, then another by Jade to Gaby - shut the Raiderettes attack down, holding them to 2 for the inning.
Coming back up to bat, the Whos knew they had to hold their lead. Cambria walked then stole her way to 3rd. It looked like the Whos were going to go scoreless as Shelbey struck out. Casey was hit by a ball and walked, then Hylah struck out herself. But Allison connected and booked down the 1st base line to finish her run with a Pete Rose slide into 1st to get on base, getting Cambria across home plate – Holy Cow! Unfortunately that was to be the only run of the inning as Gaby struck out for 3.
Shelbey took her 1st turn at the rubber and also took some time to find a groove. Going into the 4th, Allison led us off and got another hit on the day to recreate her spectacular Pete Rose slide from the 1st inning. Then Gaby struck out but Mari got on base with a walk putting runners on 1st and 3rd. Jade, on her turn, made contact with the ball and put it in the outfield for a double bringing 2 runners home and taking the lead once again, but that would be all for the Whos in the 4th as Kas struck out for the 3rd out of the side.
Bottom of the 4th, the Whos leading by 1, the Raiderettes up to bat. Walk, hit for runners on 1 and 2. Then, a hit to right field caused enough confusion on the Who defense for the Raiderettes to score the winning run and close out the game.

Game 12 - Wed 5.07 - L
They say the numbers don’t lie, but in this case, the final score of the game really doesn’t tell the full story of our loss to Tsunami yesterday. Although the Whos fell to Tsunami for the 2nd time this season, their teamwork, especially on defense, has got to be up there with the best in the division. Once again, the game was made on 1 play and that was the play that shut the door on the Whos. So, again, on increasingly rare occasions, we could be making better decisions out there, but the majority if not all the Who girls are playing their best games yet. But, to be honest, I’m tired of hearing the ‘We are proud of you’ song. Hopefully, we can turn that corner and start singing it to the other teams before season’s end.

Destinee had the rubber to open the game and, right at the beginning, she was struggling. Her usual accuracy wasn’t to be found and Tsunami took advantage. Thankfully, our defense put on a show. The first hit of the game was a pop-up and Jade, playing 3rd, charged to get under it, the ball hit her glove and popped out, but keeping her head, Jade bobbled the ball for what seemed like an eternity before locking it down for the 1st out of the inning. An overthrow by Mari to Gaby at 1st allowed Tsunami on base and a couple of walks later, they had the bases loaded. On the next play, Jade received a toss from short stop to get her runner out, but Tsunami was able to score. Bases loaded again, Destinee walked another for another score and finally a great play from Jade to Hylah at home got the last out of the inning.
Whos up to bat, with Kas leading off, were able get on base and after a couple of steals, Kas found herself in scoring position. Gaby got on base with a walk, then Jade to the ball for a ride for what should’ve been a double. She got on base nonetheless and drove Kas in to put the Whos on the board. 1st batter up for the offensive side of the inning was Hylah. Itching to hit a ball but unable to get a good pitch, Hylah walked to get on base. On the next pitch, a miscommunication between Hylah and coach held Hylah up on the steal for just enough time for the Tsunami catcher to get the ball to 2nd in time for the tag and the 1st out of the inning. Cambria walked and quickly stole 2nd then 3rd. Allison, hit a ball down the 1st base line, but Cambria was able to turn that into a run and a score for the Whos. Kas popped up and was caught out to end the inning.
Jade took the mound for round 3. Base hit to Kas at short, Kas fielded the ball and made the quick throw to Gaby at 1st for the 1st out. Jade fielded a ball on a short hit and was able to stop it and beat the runner to 1st for out number 2. Then, striking out the 3rd batter, Jade made quick work of Tsunami and held them scoreless in the 3rd.
Whos, up for the 3rd time on the day, saw Gaby walk then steal 2nd to open up the 3rd inning. A triple by Jade drove Gaby in for the score. After a strike out by Destinee, the Whos were able to load the bases. Casey struck out for the 2nd out of the inning and the Whos’ comeback hopes started to fade, but Hylah was coming up to bat. However, that was not to be as Tsunami (very clearly) intentionally walked Hylah scoring 1 run. After Hylah’s up, Cambria walked for another run and Alison was hit by the pitcher scoring the 4th run on the inning and tying up the game.

Now, I understand the strategic reasons behind intentionally walking a player. They were trying to preserve their lead. They were trying to give their pitcher a chance to strike girls out before giving up 4 runs. Hylah, (her bat just recently waking up) would’ve possibly cleared the bases with a grand slam if given a chance, which they weren’t willing to risk. But aren’t we just here to play? I mean, we’ve always taught our girls to throw strikes, but, in this league, an intentional walk just seems almost unsportsmanlike (but that’s just my opinion). I guess it is a part of the game, as unsavory as it seems, so it should be taught at some point, I suppose, but it just didn’t feel quite right.

The Tsunami runners stole to advance to 2nd and 3rd and their next batter hit a double. But quick defense got the ball back to Hylah at catcher to stop the tie breaking score for the 2nd out of the inning, giving the Whos some hope. Jade walked the next batter to load the bases. Riley came up to bat and knocked one into the outfield for a grand slam, giving Tsunami a 4 point lead. Tsunami was able to score one more before Jade was able to strike out the last batter.
Our last turn came and went quickly. Kas struck out. Gaby popped one up for the 2nd out and after a triple by Jade to put her in scoring position, Destinee struck out to end the game.

Game 11 - Double Header Game 2 - Sat 5.03 - L
For the 2nd game in our Saturday double-header, we hosted the Piedmont Predators in an interleague matchup, which saw the Whos go 0-2 to begin the 2nd half of the 2008 season (technically 0-1 since interleague games don’t count towards our standings).

Coming off our heartbreaking loss at the Hands of the Army Bratz earlier in the day, the Whos tried to rally back as we hosted the Piedmont Predators in the 2nd game of last Saturday's double-header. Now there were a few issues with this game. The first being that the Predators came in with the minimum number of players, thus forcing them to play a rule loophole game with their roster in trying to be able to start the game. Then the umps officiating were not aware of lineup rules for interleague games, which we brought to their attention multiple times, but were shut down each time. This lack of awareness of the rules of the league and interleague by the officiating team allowed the Predators to play 'illegally'. If this hadn't happened, the outcome may have been different, but ultimately the Predators won the game as it was played. Interleague games do not count for our standings, but a loss is still demoralizing, however the Whos put on a signature show. One that saw us put on a good performance on both sides of the ball, but one that fell just short of a win once again.

The opening frame saw Destinee at the rubber pitching once again with surprising accuracy to allow only 1 run to the Predators amidst a string of strike outs.
On offense, Kas brought her hitting, which she found in the last game against the Bratz to produce another double (3rd on the day). Another couple of walks allowed the Whos to score 2 runs before striking out for the inning.
Hylah took the rubber for the 2nd inning and put on a solid performance of her own. After a walk, Hylah managed to strike a batter out. But a batter managed to pull off a hit to the outfield bringing in two more runs before Hylah was able to retire the side with a couple more strike outs.
Coming into the bottom of the 2nd trailing by 1, the Whos took their at bats and the Predator pitcher was able to strike 2 out in quick succession. But the Whos started to come on and began loading the bases. However, it was not to be as Shelbey struck out and the Whos went scoreless for the inning.
Shelbey came in to pitch for the 3rd inning and after 2 quick strike outs of her own, lost the groove and walked a couple of Predators in before finding the rhythm to strike a 3rd Predator out.
Whos up to bat and again loaded the bases setting the stage for Hylah to try to take one for a ride with 2 outs, bases loaded and a full count at the bottom of the 3rd. The pitch came in, and Hylah, with a sense of desperation and in an attempt to make a big play caught a piece of the ball, but not enough to send it sailing. It hit the ground just within reach of the player on 1st base with enough time for her to pick the ball up and run to make the tag at first, effectively shutting the door on the Whos' comeback attempt in the 3rd.
Jade, closing the show for the Whos had her work cut out for her to try to hold the Predators scoreless. The 1st batter hit the ball to the infield and a heads up play by Mari throwing to Gaby at 1st was enough to get the out at 1st. Jade came alive with a strike out of the next batter. Then a base hit put a runner in play, but Jade quickly responded with another strike to hold the Predators at 5.
Unfortunately for the Whos, the 4th inning was an echo of the 3rd. This time, after 2 Whos struck out, Kas was up to bat and on a 2 and 2 count hit the ball. The Whos, hoping for another double (or more) were stunned by the hit being a pop up down the 1st base line that was caught by the Predator right fielder to end the game and to give us the 2nd loss of the day.

But I have to say that, even though we've been losing more games than winning, the girls are playing really well overall and the games have been very competitive and exciting. That's something that no one can take away from us this year. What more can you really ask for?

Game 10 - Double Header Game 1 - Sat 5.03 - L
Well Whos, at the beginning of the 2nd half of the 2008 season, we sure had our work cut out for us. Not only were we playing the #1 team in our division, but we were set to play our first interleague game of the season against the Piedmont Predators. We had a long day ahead of us, but for the most part, it was a pretty good day of softball at the Duck Pond. First up, the Army Bratz.

This was a very exciting game; a lot of back and forth action throughout; we were even up for most of the game, but our 4th inning burnout came back to haunt us and finally, it cost us the lead and the game.
RECAP
As visitors again, the Whos started off strong. Kas up first to bat opened up with a big hit to gain 2nd base. Gaby and Shelbey both followed that up with a walk to load the bases. This was to be the theme of the inning as the Bratz allowed 4 walks to close out the top of the 1st.
Shelbey took the rubber for our 1st defensive appearance of the day. 1st batter, with a nice cut got on base. Shelbey put 2 outs together, and came close with a third, but that batter had other ideas and hit a triple bringing 1 run in to put the Bratz on the board. Another strike out later and Shelbey held the Bratz to 1.
Cambria came up as our first batter of the 2nd and struck out. Allison actually got a piece of the ball on her next at bat, but was not able to beat the ball to 1st for the 2nd out of our side. Not a good start to the inning if we were to hold on to our lead. Maricella came up again and walked to get the Whos on base and managed to steal her way to 3rd. Kas took the ball for another ride driving Maricella home. Gaby got a hit herself driving Kas home for another score, but the Bratz were able to strike Shelbey out to limit the damage that we were causing.
Jade, pitching in the 2nd, put on another solid performance and even with a couple of walks was able to strike enough Bratz batters out to keep them scoreless for the inning.
Starting off the 3rd, Jade got a single and stole her way around the bases as Mari and Angelica walked for bases loaded. After walking Casey, the Bratz started to sweat as their game was getting away from them, then to seal the deal, Hylah hits a ball deep into centerfield to claim 2nd and drive in the 4th run of the inning.
With Shelbey on the rubber for the 3rd inning, the Army Bratz sensing defeat, started to wake up their offense. After their 1st batter struck out, they started connecting with the ball and getting across home plate. A key play between Mari and Hylah to get the 2nd out of the inning proved to be the last out before the Bratz hit the run limit for their side, coming on strong to close the gap.
Going into the 4th with a 3 point lead, the Bratz brought out their A pitcher to try to hold us. Cambria struck out for the 1st of the inning. Allison, stuck in there, tipping the ball all day against probably the best pitcher in our division, then finally taking the ball for a ride and gamely trying to get to 2nd, but unfortunately the ball beat her there and the Bratz were able to tag her out. That was enough to light a fire under the Whos which saw us score to more before being shut down.
Jade started off our final defensive stand strong. After an initial walk, she kept throwing strike after strike. The only problem was the newly awakened Bratz that kept swinging and hitting to put the ball into the Who infield and outfield, which, at this point couldn’t hold the Bratz’ rush and let 6 runs by to lose the lead and the game. This game was so close we could taste it.

This was a very exciting game; a lot of back and forth action throughout; we were even up for most of the game, but our 4th inning burnout came back to haunt us and finally, it cost us the lead and the game.
RECAP
As visitors again, the Whos started off strong. Kas up first to bat opened up with a big hit to gain 2nd base. Gaby and Shelbey both followed that up with a walk to load the bases. This was to be the theme of the inning as the Bratz allowed 4 walks to close out the top of the 1st.
Shelbey took the rubber for our 1st defensive appearance of the day. 1st batter, with a nice cut got on base. Shelbey put 2 outs together, and came close with a third, but that batter had other ideas and hit a triple bringing 1 run in to put the Bratz on the board. Another strike out later and Shelbey held the Bratz to 1.
Cambria came up as our first batter of the 2nd and struck out. Allison actually got a piece of the ball on her next at bat, but was not able to beat the ball to 1st for the 2nd out of our side. Not a good start to the inning if we were to hold on to our lead. Maricella came up again and walked to get the Whos on base and managed to steal her way to 3rd. Kas took the ball for another ride driving Maricella home. Gaby got a hit herself driving Kas home for another score, but the Bratz were able to strike Shelbey out to limit the damage that we were causing.
Jade, pitching in the 2nd, put on another solid performance and even with a couple of walks was able to strike enough Bratz batters out to keep them scoreless for the inning.
Starting off the 3rd, Jade got a single and stole her way around the bases as Mari and Angelica walked for bases loaded. After walking Casey, the Bratz started to sweat as their game was getting away from them, then to seal the deal, Hylah hits a ball deep into centerfield to claim 2nd and drive in the 4th run of the inning.
With Shelbey on the rubber for the 3rd inning, the Army Bratz sensing defeat, started to wake up their offense. After their 1st batter struck out, they started connecting with the ball and getting across home plate. A key play between Mari and Hylah to get the 2nd out of the inning proved to be the last out before the Bratz hit the run limit for their side, coming on strong to close the gap.
Going into the 4th with a 3 point lead, the Bratz brought out their A pitcher to try to hold us. Cambria struck out for the 1st of the inning. Allison, stuck in there, tipping the ball all day against probably the best pitcher in our division, then finally taking the ball for a ride and gamely trying to get to 2nd, but unfortunately the ball beat her there and the Bratz were able to tag her out. That was enough to light a fire under the Whos which saw us score to more before being shut down.
Jade started off our final defensive stand strong. After an initial walk, she kept throwing strike after strike. Game 9 - Tue 4.29 - L
What can I say? We were stung by the Stingers last night in what was possibly our most frustrating loss of the season. Playing with a deficit of 3 girls, the Whos played with the minimum number of girls for the first time in the season. Although the Who girls seemed excited to play, the enthusiasm wasn’t enough to overcome our player deficit.

On the bright side, the Stingers are probably the most skilled team in our division and judging by our improved score from the last time we played them (last game was Stingers: 17 – Whos: 8), we’ve shown a lot of improvement skill and play-wise. We’re still in there Whos. Every game has been competitive. We’re just missing that little X-factor or that little bit of extra effort that will start putting us over in the win column. We still have the 2nd half to see if we can improve our current record, which stands at 2 wins and 7 losses.

Top of the 3rd saw Jade get a hit for a very tempting double, but heads up play by the Stinger defense held Jade on 1. As the Whos started to load the bases, the Stinger pitcher began to struggle and walked 2. The pitcher was replaced, but didn’t fare much better as she let 2 walks in herself.
Taking over at the bottom of the 3rd, Jade put in another solid performance as pitcher. She let one run in on a walk, but that was all for the inning as she finally found where that 3rd strike was hiding.
Top of the 4th, the Whos, behind by 4, needed to wake up their offense to close the distance, but the Stinger pitcher, once again, proved to be too much for our girls and was able to string together enough strikes to keep us scoreless and win the game for the Stingers.
Although it was a disappointing loss, we proved that we can hang in there. And with some hard work on pitching, improving our team work, and staying in the pocket to take some swings, we should be able to improve our position in the 2nd half of the ’08 season.

On Saturday we played the Fireballs for the second time this season. We beat the Fireballs when we last played them. So we came into the game with a little confidence on Saturday afternoon.

Coming off our win over the Raiderettes on Thursday, the Whos were going to ride their momentum against the Fireballs. We experimented a little with our pitchers since we have a few girls interested in playing the position. The results were mixed, but we were able to see some other girls on the rubber.
We started off with Destnee, who put in a solid performance to open the game. Destinee struck her first batter out. Jade caught a pop up for the 2nd of the inning and another pop up managed to find it's way back to the pitcher and Destinee, using her cat-like reflexes was able to make the stop and hold the Fireballs scoreless for the 1st inning.
At bat, Shelbey got on base and later Jade hit the ball to drive Shelbey home for the 1 point that we managed to score in the 1st.
Kas came in to pitch in the 2nd. After an initial walk, Kas composed herself enough to strike a batter out and to catch a ball for a 2nd out. However after a Fireballs hit drove in 2 runs, Kas began to struggle. Destinee was brought back to finish the inning, but wasn't able to regain her earlier groove and the Fireballs were able to walk in 2 more for the 2nd. I was very proud of Kas for fighting through a worsening headache to try to complete her inning. That showed a lot of toughness.
Quickly the Whos fell to the Fireball defense as Gaby was out at 1st on a base hit and 2 more strike outs held us to 1 point.
Jade came in to pitch for the 3rd and the Whos, looking to turn the tide, put on a good defensive show. Mari threw to Gaby at 1st for an out, then Cambria threw to Gaby for another. The Fireballs scored another before another Cambria/Gaby combo came up slightly short for another out. But Jade finally closed out the side by catching a fly ball in the infield.
Time for the offense to go to work. After gaining a base on balls, Cambria stole her way to 3rd and waited to score. A couple more walks loaded the bases. At a key moment in the game, Jade hit a double, scoring 2 more runs to end the inning and nullify the Fireball lead.

On the bright side, this sets us up for the tie-breaker the next time we meet the Fireballs later in the season. Our record against the Fireballs now stands at 1-1. We'll get 'em next time Whos.

Yesterday's nail-biter was another very competitive game, which seems to be the theme so far for our season. And although, once again, we got the short end stick, our girls are waking up out there and more importantly our offense is waking up and scoring some runs. We still have the tail end of the 1st half of our season, plus the whole 2nd half to improve on our progress. I know we can do it.

The Whos took to the field on Monday with a gleam in their eye and a renewed vigor. Coming off of a 4 game slump, the Whos were hungry for the win on a cold Monday night at the Duck Pond.
The first inning set the tone for the Whos game. After a couple of walks we finally mounted an offense with some hits and managed to offensively break the run limit by 1 - obviously only 4 were allowed officially, but it was what the Whos needed to get into the game. Jade and Casey hit a couple of balls to make the Tsunami defense run around a bit and Kas brought all runners home with a Grand Slam to retire the side.
On defense, Shelbey, still displaying her good attitude overcame a little adversity and kept her head in the game to strike 2 girls out. Then after a few runs a pop-up to right field was caught out by Kas who decided to come to play last night, holding Tsunami to 3 points. Good stuff!
Inning 2 was a quick affair as, despite a couple of hits the Tsunami girls were able to hold us to 1 run.
Jade took the rubber for us in the 2nd and after letting 2 get by us was able to hold Tsunami to 2 (with the help of Maricella's heads up outfield play holding the runners in place) giving the home team the lead (W: 4-T: 5).
As the Whos took to the plate for inning 3, we knew that we had our work cut out for us and the pressure was on. Shelbey took a hit for a walk. Destinee got hit as well. I was beginning to wonder if the Tsunami pitcher was going to injure us until we couldn't play anymore. But with a big hit from Gaby and a couple of walks, we were able to notch 4 for the inning and take to the defense.
Shelbey took to the rubber again and although we had some solid defense, with Kas catching another out and a near miss play at 1st by Cambria and Mari, keeping the runner alive, Tsunami put another 3 on the board to tie up the game.
We went into the 4th inning with a tie game, we got a couple of hits, especially a nice strong one by Casey, which unfortunately was stopped in the infield preventing her getting on base. Although we put runners on base, by the end of the top of the 4th, we came up empty.
The pressure was on Jade at pitcher and the Who defense to hold the Tsunami rush. Tsunami took their turn at bat and with a couple of well placed hits and some good stealing managed to bring 1 runner to break the tie and win the game.

I have to say for this game it was hard to pick the game ball recipient since there was such good play out there. Kas impressed me with her effort and her key plays. Mari continues to bring it with here fielding and base coverage. Cambria is always our happiest, most enthusiastic player out there. Both Maricella and Casey are starting to do some good work out there, but the edge would have to go to Casey due to her much improved batting and effort and enthusiasm. There's still some stiffness out there, but it's great to finally see her start to 'Unleash the Beast'. Good job Casey!

The pressure was on Jade at pitcher and the Who defense to hold the Tsunami rush. Tsunami took their turn at bat and with a couple of well placed hits and some good stealing managed to bring 1 runner to break the tie and win the game.
GAME BALL
I have to say for this game it was hard to pick the game ball recipient since there was such good play out there. Kas impressed me with her effort and her key plays. Mari continues to bring it with here fielding and base coverage. Cambria is always our happiest, most enthusiastic player out there. Both Maricella and Casey are starting to do some good work out there, but the edge would have to go to Casey due to her much improved batting and effort and enthusiasm. There's still some stiffness out there, but it's great to finally see her start to 'Unleash the Beast'. Good job Casey!

Game 2 in our series vs. the Army Bratz (I keep spelling their name wrong, this is actually correct).

While this game seemed much the same in the way of results, it was much improved for the Whos in the way of execution. We keep getting better and better on defense and it is showing. I'm very proud of what we're doing out there.
HIGHLIGHTS (this is really turning into a recap - I mean, who's kidding who here?)
Inning 1 saw some strong infield play by the Whos including some good defensive bag work and some solid pitching by Shelbey to hold the Bratz to 1. The Whos took their at bats and came on strong to begin the game. We had a couple of hits to the outfield that made the Bratz run around a little, which was enough to score us 3 giving the Whos the lead in the game.
Taking the field at defense, the Whos tapped Jade to pitch and this girl was on fire for 2 innings in a row putting in a very impressive pitching performance. With the help of her team, she was able to keep the Bratz scoreless for the inning. I think it was the reappearance of the polka dot socks that made all the difference. I can't believe that this girl asked me not to pitch her before the game. Jade, that's the last time I listen to you on strategy.
The Army Bratz, trying to rein us in decided to bring in their A pitcher. I think we have to agree that this Bratz girl (Sarah) is good. There are some intimidating pitchers out there in our division and we have to work on our fear of the ball a little if we're going to score points. Either way, the Bratz plan worked and held us scoreless in the 2nd.
For the 3rd, Jade's solid peformance remained, but the Bratz coming on strong managed to slip a couple of runners in there before our defense and Jade's on fire pitching shut them down.
This gave the Bratz the edge by 1 point when the Whos took their turn at the plate. This was another exciting inning where the Whos were able to turn it around again with 3 to regain the lead.
Casey, finally waking up out there, hit the ball for the 2nd time in as many games and although she got out on first managed to put our players into scoring position. Later Angelica drove 1 home and Jade brought in 2 more to make the game: Brats 4 - Whos 5
Going into the unlimited run 4th, Shelbey was back at the rubber and some dirty tricks by the Bratz and possibly a little pressure caused Shelbey to struggle a little and a dead ball play late in the inning caused us to give up 4 runs before getting the Bratz out of there.
Smelling blood in the water, the Bratz brought back Sarah (Land Shark) to get the outs the Bratz needed to close the game out with the 3 point lead and the win.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
I have to mention that Mari has been working 2nd base perfectly over the last few games. She's quiet and you don't hear her much, but if you want a great example of how to cover a base (down and ready, running back and getting set, receiving the ball and in some cases making the tag), please watch her at work. Good job Mari, now only if we could hear her call the ball to her, we'd have a superstar at 2nd base. I also have to mention Shelbey and Jade for their work on the bases as well.
Jade was awesome on the rubber for 2 straignt innings. Incredible!

Game 4 - Tue 4.15 - L
Wow, what a difference a couple of days make. The girls are finally waking up out there and it's really great to see. We've got a little way to go yet in that department, but it's starting to feel like a brand new day. Thanks to our Who parents for whatever you did to motivate the girls. At the very least, thank you for getting them pumped up for their games and giving them the support that they need. It's really starting to show on their faces and in how they are playing out there.
I have to mention that, so far, this has been my favorite game of the season. We were just having fun out there and that's what it's all about.
Now, on to the game results.

Even though it was a loss for the Whos, making it 2 in a row, we still had some solid game play out there and it was a pretty close game. Speaking with other coaches at the end of the day, they seemed pretty impressed by the competitiveness of the game due to the low scoring.
To put it into perspective, the Army Brats are currently the #1 team in our division and we held them to only 5 runs. That means that our defense is pretty solid, but we definitely need to work on getting points on the board. So, a big hand goes to the Whos for playing their strongest defensive game to date.
RECAP (got a little too carried away to call this section HIGHLIGHTS this time)
To begin the game, the Whos took their at bats and were able to score 2 runs against the Brats. It was a valiant effort which saw us score our only runs during the game. A very consistent Brats pitcher and some good Brats defense was able to shut us down.
Undeterred, the Whos took the defense and managed to hold the Brats to 1. A spectacular heads up play between Shelbey and Hylah, at pitcher and catcher respectively, prevented the Brats from adding to their total and great pitching by Shelbey crushed the Brats rush maintaining the Who lead going into the 2nd. I think we may have found our battery in this pitch and catch combination - so far they've been the most consistent together.
In the 2nd inning, the Brats mounting a good defense of their own managed to get our girls out before any of them crossed the plate. We had a few in position, but we weren't able to bring any home. On defense, the Whos took the field, this time with Jade at the rubber. The Brats threatened to score a couple of times but our infielders were able to handle the charge. Hylah threw to Shelbey on 3rd for one of the outs. Mari guarded 1st like no tomorrow to get another out and Jade at pitcher struck out the last Brat at bat holding on to our slim lead.
Coming on strong in the 3rd, the Brats put their 'teaser' pither in. She managed to get our girls to swing at some very tempting pitches, but didn't allow us to get on base. On our end, Jade started to struggle a little and we gave up 4 runs to close out the third.
Finally, the Whos tried to rally in the 4th, but it was all for naught as the Brats tapped their A pitcher again to throw smoke and close out the game.
Not to worry, we get another crack at the Brats Thursday at 5:30. Let's keep this train rolling Whos and see if we can redeem this loss. I know you have it in you!

On Tuesday, April 8th we had a game against the Fireballs.

RECAP
This was a pretty consistently scoring game as the Whos notched 4 in the 1st and 2nd, 3 in the 3rd and 1 in the 4th.
We managed to keep the Fireballs scoreless in the 1st and 4th with Jade on the rubber feeling tbe power of the socks, but a surge by the Fireballs in the tail end of the game made the game a nail biter as we moved into the unlimited run innings.
With some solid defense by the Whos and Mari taking control to get a couple of outs at 2nd. and an against the fence catch out from the 3rd base position by Jade to close out the 3rd, helped preserve the Who's lead going into the 4th.
In the 4th, we started to feel the heat as the Fireballs were mounting a solid attack which saw them score points in the 2nd and 3rd. Finally with Jade back at the rubber, holding it down with some great pitching and a catch out for the 3rd out of the inning, the Whos closed out the game with the win effectively extinguishing the Fireballs.

The Season is here and as you all know we had opening day and our season opener on Saturday.

We had a great game. Only 1 play made a big difference in the game when the Raiderettes hit a grand slam on us, which gave them the lead. But, that's not a bad way to go out and the girls played really well out there. We even had our 1st (and hopefully not last) double play - wasn't expecting that so soon in the season.

I've decided to place the game recaps in this blog for convenience. I'm sure it's easier to forward a link than it is to copy paste everything every time. Either way, the game recaps are all available in one spot for easy review.
I hope you guys have enjoyed them as much as I've enjoyed coaching the girls and writing up the games. As you can see, the games get more detailed as I go along. Mainly due to my improving note taking and my handy-dandy voice recorder that allowed me to collect more info from games.
All the other coaches were asking me if I was some kind of secret agent or something or would ask me what I did with all the stuff I was recording. That was pretty funny.
I guess if I was smarter, I would've 'studied the tape' as it were, to analyze games and get better game planning, but, what the hey, it's my first year as a coach and I've never played any organized softball or baseball. So, I think, overall the Whos have done themselves proud this year. I know I'm proud of what we've accomplished out there.
The great majority of our losses have been highly competitive games and our wins were well earned. But the most important thing is that these girls have, for better or worse, come together as a team and are playing their game and leaving it all on the field. And I hope they've been having a blast while doing just that this year. I know I have and, not to sound cheesy or anything, I couldn't have asked for a better group of girls. It obviously wouldn't have been the same without our 12 Whos.
